Smudging and Blessings
What is it and How do you do it?
Here's the basics....
A blessing or smudging is when an individual uses smoke from burning sage or other herbs, casting the sacred smoke about the room or body to clear it of negative energy. I like to use the term "wash" the smoke around your body or home because the term reflects the same principle as washing the dirt off of your body as in a shower or bath.
When removing negative energies, Saging is usually done while you say a cleansing and protection prayer to help in preventing anything unwanted from entering your home. Putting sea salt or black salt around your home, especially at the entrances also helps in sealing out the "junk" that we can drag into our homes.
Smudging has been used by our ancestors, burning sage and other herbs has historically been used in many ancient rituals and spiritual ceremonies, particularly those of the Native Indians. Including but not limited to dispersing negative spirits, healing the sick or wounded, protection for families and hunters, keeping their souls and bodies free from "evil", to help in seasons when harvesting, hunting and providing food for one's family.
Most individuals will say a prayer or blessing while burning the sage or herb as stated above. Asking for blessings and healing from our Creator, Father God and/or Mother God, asking them for assistance in the removal of negative energies or spirits from bodies, homes, or other buildings helps in the process. Typically, when doing a smudging or blessing, open your windows and/or doors and then wash/move the smoke throughout the room, tradition dictates that you start at your front door and work clockwise, finishing back at the front door. Be sure you are paying particularly close attention to the corners of the room and under tables, shelves and cupboards and around windows. Negative energies tend to "hide" in corners when a smudging or blessing is being performed.
When smudging around one's body, be sure to wave the sage stick around the crown area of your head, circling around the body and ending with the feet. Imagine it as if you were surrounding the shape of an egg around one's body. It is helpful to direct the smoke in areas around the body including directions located to the North, East, South and West, toward the clouds and sky and towards the earth, creating a bubble like area of protection around the body.
After a smudging or blessing there is generally a feeling of the negative energy lifting from the person or place, a feeling that is almost palpable, and a strong feeling of positivity that follows. You may want to leave protection sage (dried sage) in areas of particular rooms that the negativity energy may have felt heavy. This can be in corners of the room, near doorways and windows and in bowls left in the center of a room. You can also place under beds or sofas. It needs to be said...please do not leave burning sage under anything, do not leave anything that is burning or smoldering unattended!!!
If you have washed/cleansed an area, home or body when smudging or blessing and you feel that you haven't completely cleared the area of "heaviness", continue smudging the area until you can intuitively feel that the negativity or specific energy has gone and has been replaced with a sense of positive chi or energy, a lightness or feeling of being able to breath easily... Negative or stuck energy tends to feel heavy and can give you a feeling that its hard to take a deep breath, which should not be confused with an illness or asthma condition which should be seen by a physician.
Follow a smudging with sage with protection crystals, leaving crystals of obsidian and amethyst in those areas that you may want greater protection such as the entrance to your home or near an alter or room that you use for meditation or prayer.
Smudging or blessings should be done on a regular basis, monthly or weekly depending upon the area. If you have an area that is frequented by many persons trafficking a particular space, you may need to smudge more often.
Always remember to use an abalone shell or a bowl or cup that is flame resistant to collect ashes or to lay down the burning smudge stick if necessary. I use sand in my abalone shell for dowsing out embers or the sage stick when I am finished with it. This also allows me to store it and use it again for future smudging. You can find colored sand at most pet stores in the aquarium sections that is pretty inexpensive, sand can also be found at your local nurseries. I like to use colored sand if I'm keeping sage sticks in a room, so it can be functional and decorative!

If you have a strong sense of what you are doing and have a strong decisive energy when ridding your home or others of negative energies then things should go pretty well, and you should feel a sense of loving energy and lightness both within yourself, and around you, and in the space you are in.
If a blessing and smudging are not done properly, or if you are not confident in the ritual/ceremony you are performing or if you are unsure of what you are doing, please seek advice, I would advise that you dont move forward until you feel sure of yourself and feel confident in your hearts quest.
I recommend that you study what you will be doing, recite the prayers or blessings you’ll be using so that you can enter into this experience with confidence and a sense of what needs to be done. And of course, always finish what you start, if you bring it in, put it back. If you stir it up say a prayer or blessing to calm those energies back down. And always remember to call upon your Creator, and Archangel Michael, both are omnipresent, to help cut any negative cords, to remove any negative shards, arrows, knives (energetically speaking), and to complete your blessing by asking them to surround you, the other persons involved, and the space/home, bedrooms, etc. with their loving light.
BLESSING: Imagine The Divine White Light of Love and the Purple Light of Protection enveloping you and the space, imagine it being surrounded and protected, virtually shielded by these colored lights.
**NOTE: You may find that a blessing and smudging may need to be done weekly, monthly, or every couple of months depending upon the amount of traffic you have coming and going from any given space, or the energy of a person, there may only be one person but his or her energy is really toxic. Be sure to treat it as if the energy were equivalent to twenty people. Negative energy is negative, the amount isn’t the issue, it’s the intensity of it that has the ability to do damage or make a happy home feel like an unhappy home.
